Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kumon?
Kumon is an after-school math and reading program that employs a unique learning method designed to help each child develop the skills needed to perform to his or her full potential. It is also the largest and most established program of its kind in the world.
Is my child the right age for Kumon?
Children may enroll as early as preschool, and Kumon is attended by students throughout primary and secondary school. It’s always preferable to start young and begin developing skills early to get the greatest cumulative benefit.
Is Kumon an "Enrichment" program or a "Remedial" program?
Kumon can help children who may be struggling and need to catch up, as well as those who are seeking enrichment. Our ultimate goal is for all students to study above their school grade, and to always have opportunities to reach their full potential.
My children have been studying with Kumon for many years at a different Center. We are thinking of transferring to the Tewksbury Center as it is closer. Will you honor the price we are currently paying?
Yes! As with many Kumon Centers, the price you agree on at enrollment will be the price your family pays for Kumon while you remain enrolled at this center. As an extension of this, if you transfer to us directly from another center without taking a break, we will honor the price you were paying previously.
Why is Kumon such an effective complement to my child's schooling?
Schools must cover material according to age or grade, and classes must advance as a group. Needless to say, not all children grasp all concepts at the same pace. Kumon allows the individual needs and abilities of each child to govern his or her own progress. That’s why Kumon students can perform at 100% of their potential.
How soon will I see results for my child from Kumon?
Some children progress very rapidly; others take longer. We view education as an ongoing process, and Kumon is not meant to be a "quick-fix" solution. We encourage parents to keep their children enrolled for at least six months to a year before judging the effectiveness of the program. Many children stay with Kumon for years thereafter.
How does Kumon differ from tutoring?
The Kumon Method facilitates self-acquisition of the skills and study habits needed to improve academic performance. This empowers children to succeed on their own, giving them a sense of accomplishment that fosters further achievement. A child who develops learning tools in this way may never have to rely on costly tutoring.
How much of a time commitment does Kumon require?
Most students attend Kumon twice a week year-round and do brief daily assignments the other five days. Kumon sessions and assignments can usually be completed in less than twenty minutes, for math or reading. Parental involvement is strongly encouraged and recommended for optimal results.
Does Kumon offer preparation for standardized tests?
Kumon specializes in nurturing skills that improve all aspects of academic performance, including test-taking. Through daily timed assignments, students become thoroughly accustomed to working under test-taking conditions, developing key time management and problem-solving skills. Few students are as well prepared for major standardized exams like the SAT as long-term Kumon
What is your notice policy?
If a student is going to drop out of class, either temporarily or indefinitely, written notice is required at least 30 days before the effective date. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received. Your account will be closed 30 days after we receive your notice to terminate.
Why is home grading so important?
Home grading contributes to the success of the Kumon program in many ways: On a personal level, by grading your child's work you will gain a more thorough understanding of Kumon. You will be able to see your child progress and will know when praise is deserved, or extra encouragement needed.
Home grading makes you an active participant in your child's education. Home grading means that your child will be able to correct his/her own mistakes immediately, rather than having to wait until the next class visit to do so. Instead of continuing to make the same errors for several days, students can quickly realize their mistakes and get right back on track. With home grading, your child will progress more easily and quickly.
Grading your child'’s work also ensures that the work is also completed every day. This kind of supervision can be important to make sure that students stay on track.
